Make 20v Drill Kithium Batteries Work Again
Lithium ion batteries are a wondrous invention that are lightweight and long lasting. But information technology'south infuriating when the bombardment won't recharge. You stick the battery in the charger and … nix. Guess what? You tin can fix these batteries that appear to be completely expressionless. Read on …
This post is NOT sponsored by Ryobi. They practise not approve of or endorse this method for fixing a Ryobi battery. AT all.
Spring directly to the tutorial and how to video.
One of ii things are going to happen as y'all read this post. You will either unfollow me due to my pathological boringness or … you volition suggest matrimony. And then get ready to act accordingly.
Since originally posting this tutorial a few years ago I've been hoping Ryobi would improve their batteries and chargers. So I was happy to see the development of the newer Ryobi P117 Intelliport Charger. Information technology'southward supposed to do a faster and ameliorate chore of charging your batteries but according to the reviews on Habitation Depot and Amazon they don't accept this issue figured out quite yet.
What effect? I'll tell you.
If you have whatever sort of cordless power tool, but especially one powered past a Ryobi 18V battery, you accept no doubt encountered the dreaded flashing red charger lite. And if y'all oasis't … you lot will. Information technology inevitably goes like this – you lot run to the basement to grab your cordless drill because later on 10 years of thinking well-nigh it, you're finally going to build that 4 level, Tudor style treehouse with kitchenette. Or you lot're going to hang a moving picture.
Either manner you put your battery in the charger and all yous get is a flashing red light, which according to the characterization on the charger ways your battery is defective. It isn't just dead. It's "lacking". I'thousand here to tell you you it isn't. You probably left it in the charger too long which weirdly drains the bombardment.
Your bombardment is fine. It just needs a little boost.
You Can Fix a Rechargeable Battery That Won't Take a Charge.
You heard me correct. Yous do NOT have to buy a new $fifty bombardment. You lot do not accept to call the visitor and swear at them considering this stupid "defective" bombardment is only 2 weeks old. (although past all means feel costless to do so) You exercise not have to wait until they send you a replacement battery to finish your project. You can get that bombardment upwards and working in about 5 minutes.
How to Prepare an 18V Battery
What You lot Need
- A lithium ion battery that won't accuse. (duh)
- An AC adapter (an erstwhile phone charger for example)
- A multimeter. (this is actually optional but helpful … if y'all don't have one don't worry, you tin still prepare your battery)
Note: If yous aren't used to doing this sort of affair, or using things like a "multimeter" this is going to seem crazy and hard and way out of your DIY league. It isn't.
Steps
Step 1. Cut the end off of your Air-conditioning adapter. That's right. Just cut information technology off. It'southward for a 10 twelvemonth old cell phone, you're never going to apply it over again anyway. It's frankly kind of weird that you saved it to begin with.
Step 2. Separate and strip off 1″ of each wire. You have *simply* made booster cables! Good for yous.
TIP:
Black wire = negative Striped or solid white wire = positive
Information technology IS VERY Important TO NOT MIX THE TWO Upwardly.
Step three. Remove the screws holding the bombardment together.
For Ryobi batteries information technology's a star shaped spiral head like this.
A few years ago I bought a kit of weird pocket-sized screwdriver heads from Amazon. I initially bought it considering I needed a special tip for removing my Macbook Pro encompass to replace the battery. But I've used it for a ton of other stuff since getting this kit.
TIP:
There's a subconscious screw under a piece of plastic. You need to pry the plastic off to go at the screw underneath. I used a very thin screwdriver to pry it off.
Pace 4. Pull the top off of the battery case.
Footstep 5. Remove the 2 plastic side pieces. They're the things you printing in to remove your battery from your drill.
Stride 6. Lift the battery pack out.
Step 7.Ready the Multimeter to read volts. For testing an 18 volt battery choose the xx volts setting. This will requite you lot the most authentic reading. (If you don't have a multimeter skip to Pace 9 and hope for the all-time)
TIP
Volts are symbolized by a "5" with one or two directly lines over information technology on a multimeter so it'south that section of the multimeter that you lot use. The section nether the 5 with the straight line(s). Not the squiggly line. The straight line.
Step 8. Touching the ruby probe to the positive (red) last and the black probe to the negative (black) terminal, read the voltage shown on the multimeter. In my case the battery was conveying a accuse of 0.06 volts. Which is *almost* null, but not completely nothing.
Pace 9. Plug your Ac adapter in and using the wires, boost your dead battery. Just bear on the black wire to the negative terminal (the one with the black wire going to it) and the white wire (or striped wire) to the positive last (the one with the cherry-red wire going to information technology). Do this on and off for approximately a infinitesimal.
TIP
Apparently lithium ion batteries should exist "pulse" charged. Which ways you hold your wires downwards for 15 seconds or so, and so release them. And so concord them down again. Over and over.
DOUBLE Bank check THAT YOU ARE TOUCHING POSITIVE TO POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE TO NEGATIVE.
Step ten. Test your the voltage on your bombardment pack again. It should be higher than information technology was before boosting. (Over again, if you don't have a multimeter don't worry about this – you'll simply have to press on without ane)
Mine went from 0.06 volts to seven.58 volts later on a minute long boosting session.
Footstep xi. Put the plastic cover dorsum on the battery pack (just the part that goes into the charger) and set your battery on the charger to run across if information technology volition have a charge.
If you still only get a scarlet flashing lite and the battery won't charge, boost the bombardment some more. I notice the battery charger will recognize that the battery is good again when yous boost it to between 10 and 14 volts.
Just go along repeating the "pulse" boosting and testing the battery until it will finally be recognized by the charger and you lot get the green light.
To those of you who found this subject thing to exist on par with spending 3 hours in a waiting room, sorry 'tour that.
For the rest of you? I know exactly how you feel. I felt the same way. Let me know exactly how elated you were later on you brought your first battery back to life in the comments section.
Here'due south a 3 minute tutorial video showing me as I set my own battery.
-
Cut the end off of your Air conditioning adapter. That's right. Merely cut information technology off. Information technology's for a x year old prison cell phone, you're never going to use it again anyway. It's frankly kind of weird that you saved it to brainstorm with.
-
Split and strip off 1" of each wire. Yous have *just* made booster cables! Good for you.
-
Remove the screws holding the bombardment together. There's a subconscious screw under a piece of plastic. You need to pry the plastic off to get at the screw underneath. I used a very sparse screwdriver to pry it off.
-
Pull the acme off of the battery case.
-
Remove the 2 plastic side pieces. They're the things y'all press in to remove your battery from your drill.
-
Lift the bombardment pack out.
-
Set the Multimeter to read volts. For testing an 18 volt battery cull the 20 volts setting. This will requite you the well-nigh accurate reading. (If yous don't have a multimeter skip to Step nine and promise for the all-time)
-
Touching the crimson probe to the positive (cherry-red) terminal and the black probe to the negative (black) terminal, read the voltage shown on the multimeter. In my case the bombardment was conveying a charge of 0.06 volts. Which is *almost* nothing, but not completely naught.
-
Plug your Ac adapter in and using the wires, boost your dead battery. Just bear on the black wire to the negative terminal (the i with the black wire going to it) and the white wire (or striped wire) to the positive terminal (the one with the ruby wire going to information technology). Exercise this on and off for approximately a minute. DOUBLE Bank check THAT Yous ARE TOUCHING POSITIVE TO POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE TO NEGATIVE.
-
Exam your the voltage on your bombardment pack again. It should be higher than information technology was earlier boosting. IF Information technology IS Not, And so Stop. YOUR CELL COULD BE DAMAGED AND Standing COULD BE DANGEROUS.
-
Put the plastic comprehend back on the battery pack (merely the part that goes into the charger) and fix your bombardment on the charger to see if it volition accept a charge. If you still but get a red flashing lite and the battery won't charge, boost the battery some more. I observe the battery charger will recognize that the battery is proficient again when you boost it to between 10 and 14 volts.
-
Repeat the "pulse" boosting and testing the bombardment until it will finally exist recognized by the charger and you get the greenish calorie-free.
-
Reassemble your battery. Your rechargeable bombardment is now fixed.
- Black wire = negative Striped or solid white wire = positive It is very of import to non mix the two up.
- There'south a hidden screw under a slice of plastic. Yous demand to pry the plastic off to get at the screw underneath. I used a very sparse screwdriver to pry it off.
- Volts are symbolized past a "V" with one or two direct lines over it on a multimeter and then information technology's that section of the multimeter that you use. The department nether the V with the directly line(s). Non the squiggly line. The direct line.
- Lithium ion batteries need to be "pulse" charged. Which means you concur your wires down for 15 seconds or and then, then release them. So hold them down again. Over and over.
Please directly union proposals to my publicist. A certain tool company is *not* interested in proposing marriage to me. And so I'd similar to make a point of proverb I love these tools and use them all the time. Their batteries and chargers on the other hand, could employ some improvement.

Questions & Answers
- Is in that location an easier way to do this? Possibly. Some people accept had success with putting the battery in the charger and waiting for the red light to come on. And then y'all pulse accuse the battery past rapidly plugging and unplugging the charger.
- What voltage does the charger demand to be? A 12 volt charger will do the play a trick on.
- Isn't this dangerous? There is a small-scale hazard of Big danger. So proceed with caution. If a cell doesn't immediately accuse a little bit with this technique, cease. If anything (charger, cells, wires) starts to heat upwardly, STOP.
- How long volition the bombardment last after fixing them this fashion?Until yous accidentally get out it in the charger too long over again, or until the battery'due south natural death.
